Audrey Collins excellent talk on the source for the war of 1812 mentioned those on merchant ships who were caught up in the conflict – these along with army and navy pows, some 15.000, can be found online at http://www.1812privateers.org/Great%20Britain/prisoners.htm
also explained is the definition of privateer – not as many think a pirate!!!
A list of the armed ships, non navy, licensed to attack French – some 4000+ and American shipping 400 approx can also be found at http://www.1812privateers.org
My I congratulate Audrey on highlighting the heroic work of the late Ira Dye – it’s beyond me that the Americans haven’t published his work.
