The legacy of Caribbean Through a Lens

Back in 2012 over 100 people from around the London Borough of Southwark came together in a series of workshops to explore an inspiring collection of Caribbean photographic records. Creative workshops were designed by local artist Eva Sajovik and museum heritage manager, Catherine Hamilton. The legacy of The National Archives’ User Participation Project Caribbean Through a Lens has been brought to life in The Keeper’s Gallery.

Over a period of four weeks, members of the Cuming Museum’s youth panel and local people worked together sharing stories about Caribbean history, folklore and heritage. Photographic records were produced as postcards, where various themes were creatively reinterpreted through oral histories and then recorded onto film. The film was later edited and featured as part of the permanent exhibition at Cuming Museum in 2013.

Inspired by the collection, Eva worked with a local designer to recreate a set of dominoes using catalogue descriptions and responses from all the project participants. We might not have the rum but you can certainly have fun playing dominoes or take away a Caribbean inspired postcard, now on exhibition inside The Keepers Gallery!

Jointly curated by the artists Eva Sajovik, this exhibition demonstrates our commitment to engaging people with archival material. Following the devastating fire in 2013 much of the Cuming Museum’s Grade II listed building, archival collections and permanent exhibition displays were destroyed. We wish to thank all of the staff at Cuming Museum for their dedication, inspiration, and enthusiasm for Caribbean Through a Lens.
