Jeff speaks at the first round table discussion
On 11 July, The National Archives kick-started a period of engagement, with the first of four round tables to co-create a new vision for archives. The event – at Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre – attracted a wide range of delegates from business archives, local authority archives, university archives, independent archives and trusts.
I sensed a real appetite for change and a desire to seize the opportunities presented by a new vision for the sector. This was very evident by the lively discussion that took place throughout the afternoon.
I was impressed by the huge level of commitment across the room. There was a deep understanding of, and commitment to, building a stronger sector as a key partner in the heritage and culture world and indeed beyond.
It was encouraging to see common themes in what people felt was needed to strengthen the impact of archives. Delegates kept the discussion high level with a focus on creating a vision and not a detailed action plan. They appreciated the fact that we were really keen to involve them from the outset in deciding the future of archives.
