Originally from Manchester, I moved to London 5 years ago to study Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art and Design. I graduated with a First BA in 2010 and was awarded the Chelsea Acme Studio Award for my graduate show. Primarily working in film, I made a series of works using material from local authority archives, interpreting the resources I found to form artworks based on differing accounts of the same historical events, questioning the worth and accuracy of collected information. I am particularly interested in the preservation of tradition, culture and memory and the role of the archive in achieving this. I am now a trainee on the Opening up Archives Trainee Programme at The National Archives and have been working within the Development team at London Metropolitan Archive, helping to engage the public with the collections through workshops, lectures, and school sessions. This traineeship has given me the opportunity to further my own understanding of the cultural history of London, and has enabled me to strengthen my archive interpretation skills by allowing me to creatively develop new learning resources for use within the archive.

Trainee Tuesday: Anyone for ice cream?

Ice cream may not be all that appealing at the moment, given the recent snowy weather. It’s a time when most of us just want to wrap up warm and eat comforting stews and soups. I, however, have spent a week rummaging through boxes of material from the Lyon’s collection at London Metropolitan Archive (LMA).

Result: Now ice-cream is all I can think about…

Trainee Tuesday: Broadcasting Education!

The Inner London Education Authority Television Service

Over the last six months as a trainee at the London Metropolitan Archives (LMA), I have been absorbing myself in the film and video collection and hosting a monthly Film Club dedicated to the interpretation of the previously little explored moving image archive held here. The Film Club gets together to watch and discuss films within the collection, often focussing on themes that are of particular relevance to events occurring in London within that month, whilst also providing a platform from which to engage our regular archive visitors in a different way of researching and sharing information.

ILEA 4: A teacher working at Battersea Studios

Some of the strangest and most interesting screenings have come courtesy of a collection of educational videos made by the Inner London Education Authority (ILEA) in the 1970s and 80s. ILEA was the education authority for the 12 inner London boroughs and the City of London from 1965 until its abolishment in 1990, after which the educational needs of these schools were taken on by the borough in which they were situated, in line with the rest of the country.
